3 Side Trips from Bratislava You Can’t Miss

Day Trips or Overnight Getaways

Bratislava is a stunning city with its unique charm, but why limit yourself to just one destination? The beauty of this capital city is its proximity to some incredible gems in Slovakia, Hungary, and Czechia. Whether you’re craving relaxation, a cultural deep-dive, or a culinary adventure, these side trips have got you covered. Plus, they’re short journeys away from Bratislava, making them all the more tempting. Here are three unforgettable side trips you can take from Bratislava.

Trnava, Slovakia: Wellness and Sorbetto Bliss

Often referred to as “Little Rome” thanks to its numerous churches, Trnava combines historical charm with stress-melting relaxation. It’s the perfect getaway for those who want to slow down and savor life. And it is just a 30-45 minute train ride from Bratislava, making it a perfect day trip or overnight getaway.

Trnava Highlights:

  • Relaxation at the Spa and Pools

Trnava’s Relax Aqua & Spa is truly one of a kind. This coed, nude-but-with-sheets spa boasts an extensive list of amenities that will leave you completely relaxed. From Finnish and infrared saunas to aroma and steam rooms, it’s an experience worth every second. If you’re feeling daring, take a plunge in the ice bath or try out the salt room.

For those who prefer a family-friendly vibe, head to the pools where swimsuits (and kids) are welcome. With at least 5 warm pools, jets, whirlpools, giant slides, and climbing areas, it’s a waterpark dream come true.

  • Culinary Treats

After several hours at the spa, indulge in a comforting bowl of pumpkin soup at Le Pension restaurant. This is also a great place to stay if you are planning to stay overnight because you can walk to the spa as well as downtown. For me, the true star of Trnava was Cremi, a charming gelato shop. Their passion fruit sorbetto is a showstopper, reminiscent of exotic flavors I found in Cartagena. Pair flavors like pistachio or stracciatella with this fruity delight, and you’ll find yourself coming back for more (maybe even twice in one day!).

  • Exploring Old Town

Take in the historic vibe by climbing the town’s tower for panoramic views. For a cozy café experience, stop by Synagóga Café for a refreshing drink or espresso, then treat yourself to a hearty schnitzel at Wetzlerov Dom before catching your train back to Bratislava.

Trnava is calm, charming, and refreshingly simple. It’s perfect for a peaceful overnight retreat!

Györ, Hungary: Where the Danube Meets Culture

A picturesque Hungarian town packed with charm, Györ is ideal for history lovers and foodies alike. A quick 2-hour train ride from Bratislava will transport you into a lively yet cozy old-world town.

Györ Highlights:

  • Architectural Beauty Meets River Vibes

Györ’s old town is a visual delight with its churches, towers, and winding streets. Did you know that this is where the Danube meets the Rába River? Strolling along the rivers makes for a serene yet scenic walk. One standout spot was the never-ending spiral staircase leading up to the top of a tower that offers unbeatable panoramic views.

  • Culinary Adventures

Györ is a paradise for food lovers. Kick off your visit with a langosh, Hungary’s famous fried bread, topped with garlicky sour cream and cheese. It’s a must-try carb crush! End the day with a goulash or a hearty catfish stew served alongside fresh sourdough bread. Don’t forget to treat your sweet tooth to a traditional Hungarian cake layered with nuts and chocolate sauce before heading back.

  • The Mirror and Fun Statues

Györ also has unique artistic installations that make the town feel alive. Snap photos of the cool mirrors, quirky statues, and architectural gems that dot the streets.

Györ is one of those towns where you’ll feel connected to its warmth immediately. Those two hours on the train? Absolutely worth it.

Brno, Czechia: The Underrated Jewel of Czechia

*Support my blog and adventures. If you choose to purchase an experience from the links below or within the article, I will earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Brno, the Czech Republic’s second-largest city, has an undeniable charm that’s less touristy and more authentic. Whether it’s the wide boulevards, chilled-out vibe, or impressive architecture, Brno will surprise you at every corner.

Brno Highlights:

  • Casual City Wander

Brno is a great city to soak in at your own pace. On Sundays, when much of the city shuts down, it’s even more peaceful. Without the bustle of tourist crowds, you get to truly appreciate the city’s vibe, beautiful streets, and architectural beauty.

  • A Foodie’s Delight

Make your visit extra cozy with a bowl of garlic soup topped with melted cheese and croutons. It’s heartwarming and delicious. And here’s a fun fact about their beer culture—some flavored beers (like mango!) are served with a straw. It’s a playful touch you won’t forget.

  • Live Music Under the Stars

On this particular trip, I got lucky. A jazz quartet was setting up for an outdoor evening show, so I decided to skip dinner and enjoy the music with a light snack. It added such a magical touch to the night.

Brno is a city that deserves more recognition, and once you visit, it’ll easily climb your list of favorite cities.

Bonus Side Trip: Devín Castle

If you prefer something closer to Bratislava, Devín Castle is a quick and rewarding getaway. Located at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, this stunning 1,100-year-old castle offers jaw-dropping views. The walk along the rivers leading up to the castle is stunning, and taking a boat ride back to the city adds a scenic twist to the adventure. Pair your visit with a pumpkin dumpling and tiramisu lunch, and you’ll leave feeling completely satisfied.

I Hope I've Inspired a Visit to Bratislava and Nearby Small Cities

From the relaxing spas of Trnava to the cultural richness of Györ and the unpretentious charm of Brno, these three side trips from Bratislava are diverse and unforgettable. Each destination has its own flavor, waiting to be explored.

Be sure and check out my post on the destination that followed Bratislava, Graz, Austria!
