A Month in Costa Rica: A Journey of Rain, Rooftops, and Pura Vida
Discovering Costa Rica: A Month of Adventure, Food, and Relaxation
Costa Rica is a land of vibrant culture, lush landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. My one-month stay in this beautiful country was a mix of city life in San José and a full week of coastal charm in Jacó with friends. From rooftop pools to rainforest adventures, here’s a glimpse into my journey, filled with unexpected rain, delicious food, and the warm spirit of "Pura Vida."
San José: Rooftops, Markets, and Hidden Gems
A Rooftop Oasis in the City
San José might not be the first place that comes to mind for travelers, but it surprised me in the best ways. My apartment came with a rooftop pool, hot tub, and panoramic views of the city—a perfect retreat after exploring. Whether it was a stormy evening or a sunny morning, the rooftop became my sanctuary.
Exploring Escazú and Local Cafés
One of my first outings was to Escazú, a charming area just 20 minutes from San José. While my plans didn’t go as expected, I stumbled upon a beautiful church and enjoyed the quiet streets. Back in the city, I discovered Franco Nunciatura, a café highly recommended by locals. Their coffee was excellent, and the southern chicken biscuit, while good, couldn’t quite rival a Georgia biscuit!
Rain, Thunder, and Market Days
Rain became a constant companion in San José, often interrupting plans but adding a moody charm to the city. On market days, I stocked up on fresh produce like papaya, kale, and cherry tomatoes. The vibrant stalls were a feast for the senses, and I couldn’t resist a cheesy pupusa and a locally made espresso.
Cultural Highlights
San José’s cultural scene was a pleasant surprise. I attended a symphony at the National Theatre, a stunning building from 1897, and explored the Costa Rican Art Museum. A guided walk through the University of Costa Rica introduced me to local plants, animals, and even a couple of sloths!
Jacó: A Week of Rainforest Adventures and Coastal Bliss
Settling into Jacó with Friends
After two weeks in San José, I headed to Jacó for a full week with my friends, Chris and Carlee. Despite the rainy start, we made the most of our time together. Our first dinner was a feast of fresh fish, Costa Rican-style, with rice, plantains, and tortillas. Coconut margaritas added a tropical twist to the evening, setting the tone for a week of great food and even better company.
Beaches and Wildlife
When the rain paused, we explored Jacó’s beautiful beach, soaking in the coastal beauty. A highlight of the week was our visit to Pura Vida Waterfall and Gardens, where we saw red macaws, toucans, and vibrant tropical flowers. The views of the Pacific Ocean were breathtaking, and dinner that night—mahi mahi with spicy coconut sauce—was the perfect end to a magical day.
Rainforest Adventures and Chocolate
Even in the rain, the rainforest was enchanting. One of the most memorable days of the week included two incredible experiences: a chocolate tour and an aerial tram ride.
The day began with the chocolate experience, where we learned about the cacao plant and its transformation into the chocolate we all love. Our guide shared the fascinating history of cacao, from its use by ancient civilizations to its role in modern-day treats. We even got to taste chocolate at different stages of production, from raw cacao to the rich, finished product.
As we enjoyed the experience, we were joined by monkeys who came to snack on the delicious cacao fruit and a few bananas tossed to them by our guides. Watching them up close, happily munching away, was a magical moment that made the experience even more special.
After the chocolate tour, we took an aerial tram ride high above the rainforest canopy. The tram glided peacefully through the treetops, offering sweeping views of the lush greenery below. It was a serene and awe-inspiring way to take in the beauty of Costa Rica’s rainforests.
The combination of the chocolate experience, wildlife encounters, and the tram ride made this day unforgettable, despite the rain.
The Best Day: Termales Hacienda in Orosi
Out of my entire month in Costa Rica, my day at Termales Hacienda in Orosi stands out as the absolute best. It was a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty.
The journey itself was part of the experience. I took a scenic bus ride to Cartago, a charming town about 45 minutes from San José, and then hopped in an Uber for the final stretch to the resort. As we approached, the lush greenery and rolling hills of the Orosi Valley came into view, setting the stage for an unforgettable day.
Upon arrival, I was greeted with a warm welcome and a fantastic salmon lunch. Afterward, I had the privilege of a personal coffee tasting with the grower, who proudly shared the story of their unique process. The beans are soaked in the resort’s hot mineral waters and then cooled, a method that speeds up fermentation and brings out the coffee’s finest characteristics: balanced and clean. I was thrilled to learn that these beans are used to create the Master Origins Costa Rica capsules for Nespresso. The grower’s pride in their craft was infectious, and the coffee itself was exceptional.
Next came the hike, which was both challenging and rewarding. The trail wound through the coffee farm and into the rainforest, offering breathtaking views of the valley below. The air was crisp and filled with the earthy scent of rain-soaked foliage. Along the way, I encountered vibrant flowers, towering trees, and the occasional bird call echoing through the forest. The hike took about two hours, and every step was worth it for the incredible vistas and the sense of peace that only nature can provide.
After the hike, I wandered through the property, taking in the serene atmosphere and visiting the barn animals. The goats and chickens were a charming addition to the day, adding a touch of rustic charm to the luxurious surroundings.
The highlight of the day, however, was the mineral pools. The resort features several pools of varying temperatures, each nestled in a tranquil garden setting. I spent the afternoon soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters, letting the stress of the month melt away. The combination of the soothing water, the gentle breeze, and the stunning views of the valley made it a truly magical experience.
As the sun began to set, I reluctantly dried off and prepared for the journey back to San José. The day had been a perfect mix of activity and relaxation, and I couldn’t stop smiling as I reflected on the experience.

San José’s Food Scene and Final Days
Costa Rica’s culinary offerings were a highlight of my trip. From green plantain ceviche to passion fruit daiquiris, every meal was a delight. A standout was lunch at Enboca, where I savored ceviche with sweet potato purée and calamari pad thai. Dessert was a rich chocolate decadence that tasted even better than it looked.
My final days in San José were spent exploring local markets, enjoying rooftop sunsets, and reflecting on the incredible month I had experienced.
Conclusion
My month in Costa Rica was a mix of city exploration, coastal relaxation, and rainforest adventures. San José offered cultural gems and culinary surprises, while Jacó provided a serene escape into nature with friends. And then there was Termales Hacienda—a day that encapsulated everything I love about travel: beauty, adventure, and a deep connection to the world around me.
Despite the rain, every moment was filled with the spirit of "Pura Vida"—a reminder to embrace life’s simple joys. If you’re considering a trip to Costa Rica and have the time, don’t overlook San José, and definitely make time for the beaches, rainforests, and hidden gems like Orosi. This country has a way of capturing your heart, one rainy day at a time.
