A Whirlwind Road Trip Through Austria and Slovenia

An Overnight Road Trip From Graz, stopping in Klagenfurt, Lake Bled, Ljubljana, and Maribor

There’s something magical about the open road, especially when it’s shared with a new friend, a trusty Volkswagen, and a sense of adventure. My overnight road trip from Graz, Austria, through Southern Austria's Klagenfurt and Slovenia’s stunning Lake Bled, Ljubljana, and Maribor, was a journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, unexpected detours, and unforgettable memories. Here’s a glimpse into how this overnight Slovenia adventure added to my Graz trip.

From Graz to Lake Bled

It started with a serendipitous connection. My travel companion, a New Zealander I met through a Facebook travel group and spent time with in both Vienna and Graz, was heading to Ljubljana. Instead of taking a bus, we decided that I would go along, and we would rent a car, making the most of the journey by exploring along the way. With a shared love for adventure and a map full of possibilities, we hit the road.

After a brief pit stop in Klagenfurt, Austria for lunch, our first major stop was Lake Bled, a postcard-perfect destination that feels like stepping into a fairytale. The turquoise waters, the iconic island church, and the medieval Bled Castle perched high above the lake were mesmerizing. We didn’t have time to row out to the island, but even from the shore, the view was worth every mile. The drive itself was equally enchanting, with rolling hills, charming villages, and the kind of countryside that makes you want to pull over every five minutes for a photo.

Ljubljana: A Night in Slovenia’s Capital

Arriving in Ljubljana felt like stepping into a hidden gem of Europe. The city’s charm lies in its walkability, vibrant café culture, and the Ljubljanica River winding through its heart. We strolled through the old town, marveling at the colorful facades and lively atmosphere. Dinner was a relaxed affair at a riverside restaurant, where we each ordered a spritz, and toasted to the joy of spontaneous travel.

Ljubljana’s energy is infectious, and I wish I had more time to explore its nooks and crannies. But with only one night in the city, I soaked up as much as I could before calling it a day and saying goodbye to my friend.

The Scenic Route: Ljubljana to Maribor

The next morning, I set off solo for Maribor with a packed agenda, thanks to a local in Graz who had shared a list of must-see spots. But as any road tripper knows, the best plans are the ones that leave room for detours. A sign for a cable car caught my eye, and I couldn’t resist the urge to check it out. Though the wait was too long to ride, the detour led me through winding roads and past stunning scenery that no photo could truly capture.

Driving through Slovenia felt like a dream. One moment, it was like any highway back home, and the next, I’d spot a castle or church perched high on a hill. It was the kind of beauty that makes you grateful for the journey, not just the destination.

Maribor: A City Alive with Energy

Maribor greeted me with a buzz of activity. The city was packed for a race, with crowds lining the bridges and riverbanks. Despite the hustle and bustle, I managed to grab a cheese burek—a delicious local pastry—and an iced coffee before exploring the city. The old town’s charm and the Drava River’s serene beauty made it a perfect spot to stretch my legs and take in the sights.

One of the highlights of the day was a stop at Pechmann’s Olde Oil Mill. This quirky attraction was a delightful surprise, featuring everything from airplanes and army jeeps to camels and ostriches. It was a little chaotic but undeniably fun—a reminder that the best road trips are filled with the unexpected.

The Journey Back: Maribor to Graz

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Graz, reflecting on the whirlwind adventure. The trip was a perfect blend of planned stops and spontaneous detours, of stunning landscapes and vibrant cities. It was a reminder of why I love travel: the people you meet, the places you discover, and the stories you collect along the way.

Final Thoughts

This overnight road trip through Austria and Slovenia was a journey I’ll never forget. From the fairytale beauty of Lake Bled to the lively streets of Ljubljana and the unexpected charm of Maribor, every moment was a treasure. If you ever find yourself in this corner of Europe, grab a friend, rent a car, and hit the road. Adventure awaits around every corner.
