Three Weeks in Medellín: A Journey of Flavor, Art, and Adventure
A Three-Week Adventure in Medellín
Medellín, Colombia, is a city that effortlessly blends its rich history with a vibrant, modern culture. Over three weeks, I explored its neighborhoods, indulged in its culinary delights, and soaked in its breathtaking views. Here’s a look back at my unforgettable time in the City of Eternal Spring.
Week 1: Finding My Rhythm in Medellín
My first week was all about settling in and discovering the city’s charm. I started with a visit to Cerro Nutibara, a peaceful park with winding paths, picnic spots, and a colorful replica village at the top called Pueblito Paisa. While there, I picked up some locally roasted coffee to enjoy at my apartment—a small but important step in adjusting to Medellín’s coffee scene after Bogotá and Europe.
Lunch specials quickly became a highlight of my days. I enjoyed hearty plates of rice, plantains, chicken, and soup at the restaurant under my apartment, or a Colombian tamale at the bakery below my apartment - so different from the Mexican version I’m used to but very similar to the ones I had in Bogotá. I also ventured out to try ajiaco on the balcony of Mondongo’s, accompanied by live music from below.
Week 2: Art, Food, and Neighborhood Strolls
The second week was a whirlwind of art, food, and exploration. I visited Botero Plaza, where the larger-than-life sculptures by Fernando Botero brought a playful energy to the city center. Later, I found myself at the Modern Art Museum, where the art was as inspiring as the sunset views from its patios.
Food continued to be a central theme. I discovered Mercado del Río, a bustling food hall where I savored Peruvian arroz con mariscos, and enjoyed Venezuelan arepas at Los Chamos in Laureles. My seafood arepa paired perfectly with a refreshing coconut lemonade. Laureles quickly became one of my favorite neighborhoods, with its tree-lined streets, cozy cafes, and vibrant energy.
One of the most memorable experiences was taking the cable car from Acevedo metro station up to Parque Arví. The ride offered stunning views as we soared over the hills and forests, leaving the city behind. While we didn’t have time to explore the park itself, the journey was worth it for the views alone.
Week 3: Comuna 13, Ciclovía, and New Friends
My final week in Medellín was packed with cultural experiences and connections. A guided tour of Comuna 13 introduced me to the neighborhood’s incredible street art and history of transformation. The vibrant murals and welcoming atmosphere made it clear why this area has become a must-visit for travelers.
Sundays in Medellín are for Ciclovía, when streets are closed to cars and open to pedestrians and cyclists. I walked from the south entrance to Parque Poblado, stopping for brunch at Bread Factory Panadería. The return journey was an adventure in itself, as I navigated the metro and bus system solo, dodging rainstorms along the way.
I also had the chance to attend a TimeLeft dinner at Ocio, where I enjoyed the catch of the day on plantain mash with a hearts of palm and avocado salad. Dessert was a heavenly frozen merengón with guanabana. These dinners are always a highlight, and it was fun to connect with new friends over incredible food.

Final Reflections: A City That Stays With You
Medellín is a city that invites you to slow down and savor every moment. Whether it was strolling through the botanical gardens, enjoying tacos in Laureles, or sipping maracuya pisco sours at a Peruvian restaurant, every experience added a new layer to my appreciation for this vibrant city.
From the bustling streets of Comuna 13 to the serene heights of Parque Arví, Medellín is a place of contrasts and surprises. It’s a city that stays with you long after you leave, and I can’t wait to return someday to uncover even more of its magic. Until next time, Medellín!
